Vlaamse Landmaatschappij
The Vlaamse Landmaatschappij (VLM) is dedicated to cultivating vibrant open spaces teeming with life. Its mission is to fortify rural areas against urbanization, fragmentation, and climate change. Through collaborative policy efforts and strategic investments in soil and water quality, biodiversity, and infrastructure, it aspires to create beautiful, resilient urban and rural environments that enhance the quality of life for all. Flanders, being one of the most densely populated and prosperous regions in Europe, faces unique challenges. By strategically investing in our rural areas and open spaces, it can build resilience against the impacts of climate change, such as floods and droughts. This not only safeguards the environment but also ensures the livelihood of farmers, fosters biodiversity, and provides space for recreational activities.
Actively shaping Flemish rural policy, its focus lies in adopting a region-specific approach, supporting local initiatives, and enhancing overall quality of life. Equipped with powerful legal tools, including LEADER-subsidies for rural development, Flemish land banks, environmental agreements, and digital services, it navigates complex projects to achieve Flemish and European nature and environmental targets. Regular consultations with stakeholders, including farmers, nature associations, municipalities, and researchers, allow us to forge strong coalitions that shape and enhance our countryside. A dedicated team of approximately 600 passionate employees, spanning various disciplines, collaborates to improve the quality of Flanders’ countryside and open spaces. Together, they strive to create a landscape that is resilient, dynamic, and full of life, ready to face the challenges of the future.
