FOODCITYBOOST, a Horizon Europe project dedicated to advancing urban agriculture across Europe, announces the release of a major new publication for the urban agriculture community. Titled “Innovation in Urban Agriculture – Catalogue of Current Innovative Urban Agriculture Systems”, this unique catalogue of Urban Agriculture (UA) innovations showcases a selection of pioneering systems and practices, chosen for their significant impact in revitalising cities and shaping the future of food production in urban spaces. It is designed to inspire, connect, and empower initiatives throughout Europe. The catalogue has been compiled by the Centre de Recherches en Agriculture Urbaine (C-RAU) of the University of Liège and by ASTREDHOR – Institut des professionnels du végétal. The two leading institutions work alongside 18 committed partners from nine countries, forming a diverse and dynamic consortium.
Αn important tool for Urban Agriculture stakeholders
The catalogue offers a clear, accessible overview of more than 30 innovative urban agriculture approaches transforming how food is grown, distributed, and integrated into the fabric of cities. Designed for urban agriculture enthusiasts, practitioners, researchers, municipalities, and anyone curious about sustainable food futures, it presents practical examples and emerging solutions that showcase the creativity and potential of urban agriculture across Europe. Through concise descriptions and easy-to-understand visuals, the catalogue helps readers explore new techniques, technologies, and models, making it a valuable resource for both beginners and experienced actors in the UA ecosystem. An important tool for urban agriculture stakeholders, the catalogue is available to everyone on the FOODCITYBOOST official project website, foodcityboost.eu.
Boosting urban agriculture through multi-actor approaches
As FOODCITYBOOST approaches the end of its second year out of its 4-year lifecycle, the project is proving that “Unlocking Urban Agriculture’s full potential” is more than a slogan; it is a commitment backed by active achievement. Over the past 22 months, the project supported the launch of the inaugural Urbagr’Inn Days in Liège (19-21 May 2025), a dedicated urban agriculture event that brought together practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and citizens to exchange insights and shape the future of urban agriculture. The project has also produced a praticioner brochure with 100 UA trends in urban agriculture. Furthermore, the project has documented UA policy insights through a series of Living Lab workshops. The project brings together six distinctive Living Labs across Europe (Riga, Latvia; Gorichka, Sofia; Flanders, Belgium; Wroclaw, Poland; Valladolid, Spain; and Almere, the Netherlands), each rooted in a local context and committed to advancing urban agriculture.
In addition, the project has cultivated a vibrant collaboration ecosystem involving eight European projects and international partners, including the Urban Agriculture Research Institute in Canada. A few months ago, the FOODCITYBOOST Knowledge Hub was introduced. It is a dynamic online resource, offering practical knowledge (research & policy papers, deliverables, audio and video material, etc.) to everyone interested in urban agriculture (also available on the project’s official website).
Unlocking the potential of urban farming
FOODCITYBOOST will continue its mission with an ambitious programme of activities designed to advance urban agriculture and address the critical questions shaping the cities of tomorrow. Through robust scientific evidence, practical tools, and cross-sector collaboration, the project empowers policymakers and communities to imagine and build greener, healthier, and more resilient urban environments. The newly published catalogue stands as a key milestone in this journey, offering accessible knowledge, inspiring examples, and innovative solutions that will guide stakeholders across Europe as they work toward transforming cities into vibrant, sustainable, and food-producing ecosystems.
